From Greeks to Geeks - The Future of Corporate Digital Responsibility

Pre-Conference Workshop June 15 (Thursday), 1pm – 5pm + Special Session

We would like to invite you to a pre-conference event discussing the future of Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR). This event is an interactive workshop in which different CDR stakeholders are invited to share their perspectives. This creates the basis for an open dialog with interested researchers through which we want to develop the future research roadmap for CDR. This workshop is complemented by a special session on CDR during the main conference in which the newly developed roadmap will be presented alongside current CDR projects.

Context: Over the past decade, a specific trend that is further fueling growth in the service economy is the translation of many product-focused business models into increasingly service-oriented ones. For instance, industries that have traditionally built high-priced equipment such as construction machinery, farming equipment, or airplane parts shift toward cyber-physical systems and now offer services rather than selling products - with companies such as Caterpillar, John Deere, or Rolls Royce being prime examples.

This shift toward smart and connected products is further emphasizing the relevance of digital solutions to the service industry. However, while technological innovations from the digital realm offer exciting opportunities to innovate in services, they equally introduce new challenges and opportunities.

On the side of the challenges, companies increasingly find themselves in need for guidance on issues such as data protection and privacy or the governance of algorithms employed in machine-learning-based decision-making. Many corporations lack not only the technical expertise to do this, but are also struggling with the societal and ethical aspects of what characterizes good behavior.

At the same time, companies increasingly realize that responsible behaviors in all things digital afford them with the opportunity to differentiate themselves in the eyes of the relevant financiers, talent, and customers. Studying these tensions and developing relevant insight to inform managerial practice and policymaking are at the heart of the emergent discourse on corporate digital responsibility (CDR).

The pre-conference workshop will be set-up as follows:

1. Short Introduction on CDR (15 min): The workshop organizers provide a short introduction on CDR based on the current state of research.

2. Panel discussion with CDR stakeholders (90 min): We invite CDR stakeholders to share their industry, society, and policy perspectives on the topic and provide participants with insights regarding recent efforts and initiatives. This allows us not only to gain an overview of what has been accomplished in recent years, but builds an understanding of current challenges and emergent opportunities.

3. Interactive workshop on CDR roadmap (90 min): We engage participants in an interactive workshop that builds a roadmap of current CDR-related research opportunities and facilitates the building of a research community that commits to pursuing these ideas. This part of the workshop also gives participants an opportunity to share their own experiences and recent projects.

4. Roadmap synthesis (30 min): We conclude the workshop’s ideation processes in pulling together a research roadmap. This provides a key crystallization point for the CDR discourse moving forward and will help to inspire new research ideas. The roadmap also links the workshop to a conference special session in which the workshop’s results are showcased alongside a selection of state-of-the-art CDR research projects from a variety of different backgrounds.

This workshop will take place at the 2023 Frontiers in Service Conference, June 15 (Thursday), 1pm to 5pm. You need to register for Frontiers and register for this event to participate. We expect participants to be physically present at Frontiers and will not facilitate online presentations.

Researchers interested in joining the workshop (only) should submit a short proposal including their full name, title, affiliation, and email address as well as a short motivation statement why they want to join the workshop (max. 250 words).

For those who also want to present their CDR-related work in the special session, the proposal should include the following sections: Abstract, Introduction and Motivation, Methods and Data, and (Expected) Results. The cover page should provide the full name, title, affiliation, and email address of each author. Proposal length is a maximum of 1,500 words excluding tables, figures, and references.

Proposals should be submitted as a single Word or PDF file to Lara Lobschat  (l.lobschat@maastrichtuniversity.nl) before March 31, 2023.

Important dates:

  • Proposal submission deadline: March 31, 2023

We would like to invite you to a pre-conference event about the Special Issue on “Human-Robot Interactions in Service” at the Journal of Service Research. This event takes the format of an interactive workshop where we will provide further context for the special issue and create an opportunity for interested authors to exchange ideas, provide feedback, and learn from each other.

This workshop of three hours will be composed of three stages:

1. Short Introduction to the Special Issue (30 minutes): Co-editors will open the discussion about the challenges of the topic and expectations about the SI.

2. Panel Discussion about Human-Robot Interactions in Service (45 minutes): A panel with 6-8 prolific researchers in the field, at different stage of their career, will discuss the rise of service robots across service industries, its challenges in practice and potential research topics.

3. Roundtable Research Presentations (75 minutes): Small group roundtable discussions about the participants’ papers that target the special issue. Each table will be assigned one senior scholar, and co-editors will rotate around different tables to provide comments and different point of views.

This workshop will take place at the 2023 Frontiers in Service Conference, June 15 (Thursday), 9am to12noon. You need to register for Frontiers and register for this event to participate. We expect authors to be physically present at Frontiers and will not facilitate online presentations.

Authors interested in presenting their work should submit a proposal to the special issue team. Proposals should be submitted as a single Word or PDF file here before March 15, 2023.
